An Independent Review for The Year That Changed Us by Helen Rolfe

This is such a heartfelt story of two best friends told in present day and also told from when they were young. until they fell out. Lise family has everything, but they don’t share much love, not even with Lise. Emma’s family has love and laughter and are very close. Lise becomes part of Emma’s family. They are like sisters, even the fact that Lise is sent to Boarding school doesn’t put a dent in their friendship. They write and share all details of their teen angst with each other. The women even spend a year in Paris, where their friendship is tested.

Now in the present day, Lise finds herself back in Bath, moving into her childhood home with her daughter. Emma still not talking to her, even though they have been through losses and life experiences where they would have needed each other. Can their friendship be saved? What about the men in their lives and those who impacted their youth? You’ll have to read this 5 star book to find out, I can’t give everything away.

A warm-hearted and gripping story of community, secrets and the family we choose that will captivate fans of Lucy Diamond, Cathy Bramley and Jessica Redland.

As young women, Lise and Emma had the kind of friendship people dream about. While Lise’s own family was distant and disengaged, Emma’s was welcoming and warm, and for the first twenty-six years of their life, growing up together in a close-knit community, the duo were inseparable. But when they decide to spend one year living together in Paris, what starts as the adventure of a lifetime becomes a disaster that changes everything. And when Emma returns to Bath the following summer, Lise stays behind in France, their friendship in tatters.

Now, sixteen years later, Lise has come back to their hometown, determined to put things right. But to do so, she’ll have to face up to the truth about what happened in Paris. And with Emma refusing to talk to her, can she get close enough to share her secret?

About Helen:

I write contemporary fiction and like to weave stories about family, friendship – especially intergenerational friendships, secrets and community. My characters often face challenges along the way as we do in real life. But what I hope I bring with my fiction is a feelgood factor once you reach the end of the story, a sense of hope and positivity no matter what my characters have been through.

Location is a big part of my writing too and I love to give my readers different settings to choose from. My books have so far been set in the Cotswolds, England’s east coast, New York and Australia.

I hope you decide to read my books and as always, please do keep in touch via my social media. I’d love to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Helen x
